About Your Guides

Avebury Henge lies at the heart - and almost certainly served as the nerve centre - of the most complex concentration of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in Europe. It is the greatest of all henges, and contains the largest stone circle in the world. At almost a mile in circumference, the henge is so large it now encompasses much of the modern village of Avebury, which obscures sightlines and interferes with the monument's layout. Therefore, the remains of the monument are notoriously difficult for unguided visitors to understand.

For that reason, Maria Wheatley and John Drews have devised The Avebury Experience henge tour. John's role is primarily concerned with the archaeology and history of the monument. He provides a comprehensive (almost stone by stone) factual guide that enables all those who participate to visualise the original layout and the scale of the henge's multiple circles and earthworks, and to learn all about their chequered history.

Maria Wheatley - your earth mysteries guide. Maria is a part time tutor for Swindon College where she teaches a variety of holistic courses, including past life regression, reflexology and dowsing. The late Dennis Wheatley, a world-authority on the geodetic system of earth energies, taught Maria how to locate and dowse these powerful earth energies in the landscape which she has been studying for over 15 years and is pleased to share her knowledge and experience with you. She has researched the Avebury area for many years and offers some new and exciting theories which are published in her book co-written with Busty Taylor 'Avebury Sun, Moon and Earth'.

John Drews first became interested in Neolithic monuments when he was writing his Lakeland guidebooks 'Lakeland High Tarns' and 'The Lakeland 100'. He noticed similarities in the landscape around the ancient sites in Cumbria and then switched his attention to the Avebury/Stonehenge World Heritage Site. Eight years of research later, John now has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the site. He has acquired some fascinating new insights in the field of landscape archaeology and is currently writing a book that will shed new light on the mystery of Silbury Hill - Europe's largest prehistoric mound, which is visible from within Avebury Henge.
