‘Earth divination is one of the most powerful systems of magic that ancient people derived from the four ruling elements: Aeromancy divination by air, geomancy divination by earth, pyromancy divination by fire and hydromancy divination by water’.

Earth divination, or geomancy, is one of the oldest divination systems. Originally, tribal shaman devised geomancy to commune with the Earth. Millennia ago, when facing uncertainty, or seeking advise, a shaman would throw sacred seeds upon the Earth and the pattern or position they created would be interpreted.

Undoubtedly, the seeds represented the Earth’s fertility and questions concerning the forthcoming season and harvest would be sought. Communicating with the Earth was paramount and understanding her seasons and moods were commonplace using geomantic skills. It was believed that each of the sixteen geomantic symbols represented a force of nature and a way to commune with the Earth Spirit. Collectively, the sixteen-geomantic symbols were regarded as the silent language of Mother Earth. Alternatively, pebbles or stones were often cast upon the earth and this ancient tradition was developed and revered by the prehistoric priesthood.

Earth divination can be used for:
• Casting a chart and predicating future trends
• Interpreting our homes and workspaces
• Interpreting ley lines, earth energies and the land upon which we live
• Clearing negative energies by using geomantic power symbols

Casting a chart
You can use earth divination to cast a chart to predict future trends and cycles. From drawing sixteen lines of dots or dashes – making marks upon a piece of paper – earth symbols are created. Originally, a shaman or priestess would place a staff in the ground to make indentations which would form the geo-symbols. From these symbols eleven others are created and placed within a chart. The chart uses the twelve astrological houses. Each house rules a particular area of life. For instance, the second house rules money, income, material possessions, the land and material values. Whereas, the tenth house governs the profession, career, public image and one of the parents usually the father. Physically the tenth house also rules the knees.

The geo-symbols within the chart can be interpreted and bear in mind that geomancy is highly accurate – it had to be – the lives of our forefathers depended upon it.

Medieval influences
During the 16th century, a magician called Cornelius Agrippa reintroduced earth divination to European shores. Born at Cologne in 1486 Agrippa became an accomplished physician, military commander and was a spy in the service of Maximilian the First. Later he became the foremost geomantist and mastered eight languages. He translated ancient Hebrew texts into Latin and was the first European scholar to expound upon the Cabala. Agrippa influenced many writers on magic such as Francis Barrett, Eliphas Levi and A.E Waite.

During the 16th century occultists merged geomancy with astrology assigning a zodiac sign and planetary ruler to a geomantic symbol. However, critics claimed that geomancy was ‘an earthbound science’, which should remain separate from astrology and several modern geomants agree. In the 19th century, a German scholar Franz Hartmann devised an indoor method of geomancy. Dots or lines were randomly drawn upon a piece of paper echoing the former tradition and in the time-honoured practice, the dots created the geomantic symbols.

Interpreting and understanding the land, our homes and workspaces
Geomantic symbols can be used to interpret the energies within our homes and workplaces. To commune with ley lines and earth energies and to understand the land upon which we live. The geomantic symbols are the voice of Gaia – the voice of the earth – and any location can be deciphered using this historic system.

Several of the geomantic symbols are known as Power Symbols which can negate harmful or detrimental energies, cleanse the building or heal the land of toxic energy and rebalance the area. Power symbols are also highly protective.

Creating fertility and a golden harvest
In past times power symbols were placed into the earth prior to ploughing or seeding. The symbol remained there for one lunation and then ploughing would commence. This system of sympathetic magic would ensure a golden harvest. Today we can use the same principles to enhance our lives and protect our homes.

About your tutor:
Maria has taught dowsing, astrology, past life regression, tarot and reflexology since 1991 for Swindon College and several private colleges throughout Southern England. Maria has also written diploma courses for the BSY Group - British School of Yoga - and first taught Earth Divination in 1992 and is considered one of the modern day pioneers of this ancient art.

Her late father, Dennis Wheatley, founded the Blunsdon School of Dowsing and Wyvern Dowsing Society in the late 80s to create a top independent dowsing school and dowsing society to promote dowsing expertise and a high standard of tuition. A European Dowsing Master and several Chinese Feng Shui Masters taught Dennis and Maria advanced dowsing techniques and showed them how you can use the subtle frequencies of the Earth to harmonise your mind, body and spirit. Sadly, her father died in 2006 but Maria is continuing her father’s work and has renamed the dowsing school The Avebury School of Esoteric Studies. Maria’s dowsing teachings are now incorporated into a nursing exam programme based in the USA. Maria is very proud of this achievement and thanks the open-minded nursing teachers in America.

Maria creates a relaxed atmosphere for students to explore the ancient art of Earth Divination. With over 15 years of professional tutoring for various educational authorities, Maria understands how to maximise your potential and develop your psychic sensitivity. Her high standards of tuition enable you to quickly grasp the key principles of the subject. Maria is passionate about the communing and working with the Earth Force and also has a great sense of humour and enjoys meeting new students.
